Swiss Family Robinson Goes to Denver

On Monday March 1, at the Fox Aurora Theatre in Denver, the original cast (with Jake Walker) will be doing an abbreviated hour-long reading of Swiss Family Robinson.  The idea is to drum up some interest in the play in the Denver area.

There have been some exciting changes.  First of all, Ariel is an actual human girl.  In the original version, she was a mysterious island spirit.  In the new version, she’s a girl that was shipwrecked just like the family, and as a way of coping, dresses her self in leaves and flowers and makes believe she’s a powerful island spirit.  Luckily for Fritz, she decides to stop pretending and be human.  Fritz gets the girl.

    The waiting game

Every year the same rituals of theater take place. This time of year is when actors vie for any knowledge of what the casting will look like for the upcoming season. At gatherings and dinners the inevetable question will be “You hear anything?” Actors will then trade guesses about who might be cast in what role and if another actor gets that role how things might end up otherwise. Gossip will be traded like stock tips or game betting, “Jimmy the fish says 3 to 1 Jackson directs Spelling Bee”.

You’ll notice no one is doing the obvious thing and asking Mo, the artistic director. This is because we know, from years of experience, that the best we’ll get is, “I have you in mind for something.” What that something is, sometimes not even Mo knows until other pieces start to fall into place.

Sadly, this won’t stop us from guessing. Though I do know one thing for sure, none of us would want to be the ones having to do the casting!

By the way, you guys hear anything yet?
