    And this too shall pass

The summer season has come to an end here in Creede Colorado. This weekend has been filled with many tearful farewells, info exchanged, and promises to meet up in the future. The funny thing is, unlike the rest of the world, these promises will likely be kept due to the shockingly small sphere of the theater community! A boon to us all.

While I’m not the one typically known for emotional outbursts during these departures, I do want to congratulate the leaving company this year for being one of the most talented and personable groups I’ve ever worked with in Creede.

While basically taking the weight of our flagship musical on their shoulders, the group of new Creede Rep actors and tech’s conducted themselves with veteran skill and professionalism and those parting veterans once again added ever more reason to revere them as the theater professionals that they are.

In the end, I look at this group of actors and technicians as one of the best I’ve ever seen in Creede and I’m fortunate to have worked beside them. I would think that audiences (with record breaking attendance) would agree. I hope many of those skilled artists can return and I wish the best for all those who can’t. I have little doubt that the company of 2010 will achieve great things, in theater and out.

I wish the best to all who’ve left this little oasis. I hope to see you all again.

    An annual question.

I’ve been participating in theater since I was in 6th grade. At the age of 19 I went into Conservatory and actually took theater up as a profession. One of my professors, Kevin Robison (now Artistic Director of the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus), made a statement that has stuck with me, “If you can find anything in life that fulfills you, that isn’t theater, do it.” At 19 I don’t think I could have honestly grasped the meaning of his statement. I obviously knew that being an actor wasn’t a job paying wages like that of a lawyer or doctor, but I don’t think I was in a place to anticipate the other difficulties that came with the territory.

Michael, I’ve seen your work thus far this summer and once again know how gifted you are as an actor. Your questions are very real especially now that you have a wife and perhaps soon a son or daughter. From my own life and from observing the lives of friends such as Mandy Patinkin and a host of others (including myself) who chose to teach and act in our communities rather than aim for a professional career, those who go on never seriously look back or consider any option BUT a career. It is a huge leap of faith. It is based not only on desire but on determination, being a good team player, using networking, and being willing to make the sacrifices, often extremely difficult sacrifices. From my vantage point, and for what it’s worth, you have the chops to make it. Just bite down and dont let go. Your friend and admirer, Gary Mitchell
